Trust me the trails dont get kept up any better.
Careful! There's a LOT of people who ride the trails, but only a few of us that keep them up. I know, I'm a grant sponsor and a groomer operator. We do the best we can. Are you a club member? Probably not. Join us! I think you are valadating our concerns. We are currently paying for the trails to be groomed and they are hardly ever done if at all. Its nothing against you guys that do the grooming I assume you can only do what is allowed by the state and the $$ they provide. I have inqired to the DNR several times as to how I can help out and they never offer up any useful information. I would be more than willing to help out. Can you give me some more info? bjf102106@yahoo.comThanks, Jeff I hope you dont groom as slow as you ride!

even if it does go up in price ill pay it.. but i would really like for the dnr officers to understand that the orv is good for 1 year from april 1st to march 31st. i had to explain again to a dnr and a county sherief that my orv was still in date even tho it says 09.. twice in the same day 45 minutes apart playing on the ice.

When this trip is over I'd rather look back and say "What the hell was I thinking?!!" instead of "I wish I would have tried that" If life ain't fun . . . . You ain't livin' it right It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. . . then it's freakin' hilarious

I'll post for all to see. The way the snowmobile program works is like this. A trail sponsor (in our case a snowmobile club) applies to the state for a grant each year. For those of us that have established trails, it's really a re-newal. Once we are ok'ed, we get a budget based on how many miles of trails we have and a few other factors. The DNRE just handles all the paperwork and administers the monies. There are certain guidelines we have to follow for brushing and signing, grooming and other maintenance issues. The amount of time spent is all up to the individual clubs, but we are expected to keep things in good order and safe. As far as grooming goes, groomers run on average 10 MPH. We are given one groomer for every 50 miles of trails we maintain (we have 2 groomers to cover about 60 miles of trails). We get paid (from the program) for brushing and signing and for the actual grooming operations by the mile. Most of the time we don't go out during the day because there's so much traffic it get's torn up the minute we finish. Also, most of us are volunteers that do not get paid and have regular jobs. So when it snows, it's like having two full time jobs. To answer your questions directly, GET INVOLVED WITH A LOCAL CLUB! They're the ones doing the work to support the sport, not the DNRE! Trust me the trails dont get kept up any better.

Sorry for the confusion. No, snowmobile clubs do not maintain the ORV trails. I have no idea who does that. We always welcome new members in our club ( www.driftskippers.com). We're based out of Coloma, hence the addition of "join a local club". Unless you're down here in the SW corver of the state, I doubt you'll travel to this area for meetings, etc. But there are "local" clubs all over the state. You can check the Michigan Snowmobile Association ( www.msasnow.org) to find one near you. Hope this helps to understand. No matter what we ride we're all in this together I'll post for all to see.
